Permanent Representative of the Kingdom of The Netherlands to the Council of Europe

By R.J. Syed

I was asked to write a report about my experience of the RIO-trip, in specific about our visit on Monday the 24th April 2006 to the residence of ambassador Mr. van der Velden, since September of 2005 the permanent representative for the Netherlands to the Council of Europe.

After a long but interesting first day visit to the Council of Europe and the Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg, we had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Van der Velden for a reception at his residence. The permanent representatives of all member states are stationed in Strasbourg and join the Committee of Ministers, the paramount institution of the Council, on behalf of the ministers of foreign affairs. The ambassador lived within walking distance of the Council and when we arrived, we were warmly welcomed by his chargé d`affaires, Mr. de Boer.

At the balcony we were served hors d'oeuvres and drinks. It was a nice gathering and we were joined by all the other guest speakers of that day. We talked with several guest speakers and asked them for advice regarding working for the Council of Europe and about their own career. I also had the chance of talking with the ambassador and his charge d'affairs about their views on some matters and how the Council has developed in the years. They were very friendly and knowledgeable. It wasn't an everyday event, it was a beautiful residence and Mr. van der Velden was very kind to give us the opportunity to meet with him. At the end I had the honour of thanking him on behalf of the group for his hospitality and his work as the Dutch delegation by giving him a token of our appreciation. I also thanked Mr. de Boer. After the gathering we thanked everyone and left for the hotel having experienced yet another great event with the RIO-trip!
